Breast augmentation surgery is also known as breast enlargement, breast enhancement, breast reconstruction, augmentation mammoplasty, boob augmentation, or boob job. The typical breast augmentation is to give someone who was born with a genetically small breast called “Hypomastia” or “Micromastia”, an increase in the size, shape, or fullness of the breast. Another case in which breast reconstruction surgery can be very helpful, is to restore the volume that has been lost, usually due to deflation after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
One of the procedures in augmentation mammoplasty is called “Inframammary”, in which a small incision, about an inch long, is made underneath the breast. Another breast enlargement technique is “Peri-areolar”, which is an incision around the nipple, also about one inch. Depending on the size of the implants you are choosing and whether it is silicone or saline breast implants, your plastic surgeon can place the incision or entry point at any place that is more desirable to you. The typical breast augmentation takes approximately one hour, and it takes about two years for scars to fade completely.
Implants come in all different shapes, sizes, widths, heights, and projections, which gives the appearance of larger or smaller Breasts. There are certain rules in breast augmentation, and one is what’s called the footprint of the breast, so depending on the measurements of a specific patient’s chest wall, the width and the height, your surgeon should keep the implant in that size range; so that they look proportional to their frame.
The advantage of having a saline breast implant is that if the breast implant ruptures, the body will reabsorb the saline water. The disadvantage of the saline breast implant is that the little ripples from around the implant can sometimes be visible through the skin. Fortunately, “fat grafting”, can help address the rippling problem. In fat grafting, fat is taken out of one body part, and it is transferred into another body part. Another difference is that the Saline breast implant is cheaper than the silicone breast implant.
Breast implants are quite different in their projection. Some flatter breast implants are called lower profile implants and the Plumper breast implants are called high-profile implants. These different implants could be chosen based on the patient’s preference. Some people may want a breast that is more projected, which is how the breast sticks out of the body, whereas some people might want something more subdued. The patients might be interested in having either an anatomic shaped, or round breast implant. Also called a teardrop-shaped breast implant, an anatomically shaped breast implant will give more of a natural result to the augmented breasts. Round breast implants will give more fullness in the upper pole of the breast.
The choice between a textured surface and a smooth surface breast implant is also very critical. The texturing is essential in the case of anatomic or teardrop-shaped implants; because the texturing is what allows the implant to stay in position. A textured surface minimizes the risk of having a rotation of the implant within the breast, which could cause some serious aesthetic problems. With a round implant, if the surface is smooth and the implant turns within the breast, the shape will be preserved. Lastly, the plastic surgeon can guide the patient in choosing a size based on what the patient has expressed in terms of personal preference.
The three most important risks in breast augmentation surgery are bleeding, asymmetry, and capsular contracture. The risk of bleeding in qualified hands is very small. The biggest risk in breast augmentation surgery is that all breasts are asymmetric. Every woman goes for an augmentation mammoplasty with asymmetric breasts, and all of them are going to end with asymmetric breasts as well. The plastic surgeon attempts to make the breasts as symmetric as possible. There are things than can be done to decrease breast symmetry, like changing the size of the implants, lowering or raising the lower border of the breast, or the inframammary fold; however, there is a risk of the need for another operation due to asymmetry in a small percentage of patients. In the case of capsular contracture, there are different ways to treat it, but sometimes women have to go back to the operating room in order to have the capsule removed, and the implants changed into a different Location.
In America, breast augmentation costs around $5500. A saline breast augmentation in South Korea will cost $6,000. In India, the cost of breast augmentation starts at $3000.
