What is the difference between lazy aye and Strabismus?

Lots of people think that anyone with misalignment of the eye has a lazy eye, but these two conditions are not the same. Lazy eye (Amblyopia) differs from Strabismus. We explained about Strabismus earlier, which was described as the misalignment of eyes; on the other hand, Amblyopia is a neurological complication. However, Amblyopia can occur as a result of long term unilateral strabismus.

Does Strabismus lead to blindness?

People who suffer from even as little as one millimeter of misalignment can have different angels between expressed images to the brain. As a result, the brain ignores one of the images with lower quality. This ignored eye will get weaker by time passing, and if continued, it can cause blindness too. This also happens if your eye correction prescription was not very accurate, or if you had cataract.

Does Strabismus get worst if not corrected?

Yes, if you left Strabismus untreated, it can cause lazy eye (Amblyopia) and permanent blindness and permanent visionless. Strabismus is treated according to the underlying reason, like correcting refractive errors if found, patching, or eye drops if the Strabismus was mild or uncomplicated. In other cases, we might need surgery.

When is the best time to perform strabismus surgery?

If the patient was an infant, we do perform the surgery at the age of 1-2 years, as the protocol describe, also some countries still apply the old protocol which prescribes the surgery for the age of 4-5 years old children. The main benefit of the early surgery is restored binocular vision if the operation was performed early enough.

How do doctors diagnose Strabismus?

A doctor can diagnose Strabismus by only looking at the child's eyes, if it was obvious enough, in which the eyes do not look at the same point at a time. In some other cases, the doctor may perform a test called cover-uncover test, a movement in the eye while uncovering it indicates Strabismus.

How to assess Strabismus in children?

Several examinations help us detect Strabismus and also associated Amblyopia if found. Light reflex testing shows us the alignment of the eyes by asking your child to look directly at a point of light. The other test uses prisms to analyze the alignment of your child's eyes.

What are the causes of Strabismus?

Well, Strabismus can be caused by several issues. The first cause is an underlying problem with the muscle moving the eye, and the second cause can be described a problem in nerves that transfer signals from the brain to the muscle or the control-center of eye-movement in the brain. Strabismus can also occur as a result of some other health condition, or an injury.

Is it painful to have strabismus surgery?

Pain receptors vary widely between people and the same applies to strabismus surgery. Some people may feel pain more than others, while others might not experience any serious pain. The prominent experience of patients is a moderate pain that responds to painkillers and this pain period differs due to patients, beginning from hours and might last till days.

How much is strabismus surgery successful?

Almost all surgeries' success rate is between 60% to 80%, and for Strabismus, it is 80%.

How long does the recovery of Strabismus surgery take?

Most of the time, you can continue your daily activities within a few days after the surgery. During your first few days after, your eye alignment can indicate the final result. However, more stable results may not be very obvious until 4 to 6 weeks after your surgery.

Is it possible that Strabismus come back after the surgery?

For some people, the eyes may drift apart again after years from the surgery. The reason is that the surgery does not correct the original defect in the brain caused the eyes to wander in the first place, so the problem may come back years later. But it doesn't always happen.

Does my vision improve if I have Strabismus surgery?

It happens when the surgeon recommends an extra surgery. It is crucial to note that strabismus surgery fixes the eye muscle, which affects the appearance and this does not necessarily mean that you will have vision improvement.

Causes of Keratoconus are; heredity, weakness in collagen, using contact lens without consulting an eye doctor, frequent eye rubbing.

Can we treat Keratoconus with medications?

The Keratoconus can't be treated with medication; however, the medications are helpful in fixating the cornea when wearing contact lens or glasses. Some of these medications steroidal eye drops, cyclosporine, topical antibiotics, and localized fixative cells.

What are the types of treatments for Keratoconus?

Keratoconus has two types of treatment: surgical and non-surgical treatment.

The non-surgical treatment is wearing glasses or contact lens to keep the cornea stable. The surgical treatments for the Keratoconus are the process of fixating the cornea and corneal transplant plus corneal truncation via laser.

Can I have LASIK surgery when I have Keratoconus?

No, LASIK surgery requires a balanced cornea, but when you have Keratoconus, the shape of the cornea is distorted, and this can prevent the LASIK surgery.

How much is the cost of Keratoconus?

The cost of Keratoconus surgery and treatment depends on the type of treatment and the country in which the treatment is done as well as the technique used in operation. So, we cannot definitely determine the cost of Keratoconus treatment.

Is Keratoconus genetic?

Yes, heredity is regarded as one of the common causes of Keratoconus and this eye disease is transmitted through the gens.

What are the warning signs we experience before retinal detachment?

Some signs always occur before the retina detaches or worsens. These signs are: Suddenly having many floaters while looking, specks that drift through your visual field, light flashes appearing in one or both eyes (photopsia), the peripheral vision fields reduce gradually, blurred vision.

What is the most common cause leading to retinal detachment between the other causes?

The most common among all other causes are both injuries and aging.

Is retinal detachment severe?

If left untreated, retinal detachment can cause blindness. Still, the severity of complications depends on the type and severity of the detachment when the retina is left or pulled from the position it is supposed to be. The patient might experience blurred vision or degrees of vision loss.

How is the progression of retinal detachment?

The progression grossly depends on the underlying reason which caused the retinal detachment in the first place. This rate can vary from a few days to weeks. Other facts affecting the time of progression are the number and the size of tears in the retina, and also the patient's age.

Can I get retinal detachment due to rubbing my eyes?

Yes, if you rub your eyes, hardly you may progress a retinal detachment, also rubbing can harm the front of your eyes.

Will I restore my vision after I have had a retinal detachment?

After the surgery, you may experience discomfort. If the surgery is sclera buckling, you will experience blurred vision. It will take a few weeks to three or six months to get back your earlier vision, depending on the patient's condition and the type of surgery.

What type of anesthesia do surgeons use for retinal detachment surgery?

It usually takes one to two hours to fix your retina, and surgeons usually prefer the surgery under local anesthesia where you are awake. However, you feel nothing in your eyes, even the minimum complications of anesthesia.

Will I need cataract surgery after retinal detachment surgery?

You will usually have a recommendation to undergo cataract surgery, especially if the surgery type you had was applying intravitreal gas. Also, the trauma happening due to the surgery can cause injury to the lens, which induces cataract.

How much is the success rate of retinal detachment surgery?

If the surgery is a single vitrectomy or scleral buckle, the success rate will be around 85%. If any additional procedures are performed, the success rate gets over 95% of successfully reattached retinas. However, it sometimes takes several months to get the best vision accuracy.

How long is the recovery time of retinal detachment surgery?

This depends on the type of surgery you undergo. For laser surgery or cryopexy, you will be able to have your normal daily activities within a few days, but you need to be aware not to do any strenuous things until your eye is fully healed. On the other hand, for retinal reattachment surgery, you will probably be able to return to your normal life within two weeks.

Pain experience differs from one patient to another, but usually, you will have pain accompanied by blurred vision, swollen eye, redness, and some tenderness. But often, all these side effects disappear after a few weeks.

How successful is corneal transplantation?

The chances of rejection in a corneal transplant are not very high. In fact, corneal transplantations are the most successful of all tissue transplants. The risk of rejection, in a full thickness corneal transplantation is around 20 percent, DSEK corneal transplantations have around a 12 percent of rejection risk, and the risk of rejection in DMEK corneal transplantation is reduced to less than 1 percent.

How long does it take to recover from a corneal transplant?

Depending on the type of the corneal transplant, Full recovery may take between 6 to 12 weeks. But that time is for achieving the best result in the clarity of vision. You can go back to normal life after two or three weeks. But you are not to do any activities that would put pressure on the eye, like weight lifting, for three to four weeks. You cannot drive or swim until your eye specialist allows you to.

How painful is a corneal transplant?

During the surgery, you will experience no pain, since you will be given a local anesthesia. Some swelling and discomfort is normal after the surgery, but if you are experiencing a significant amount of pain, you should visit your eye doctor immediately, since excessive pain can be a symptom of cornea tissue rejection.

Can you go blind from a corneal transplant?

The rate of rejection, in all types of corneal transplantation, is from one to twenty percent, plus you will be given medications and eye drops that will impede the corneal transplantation rejection. With all these measures taken, if your body rejects the donated tissue, the surgery will be repeated. If those surgeries are not unsuccessful, blindness might result.

Do you have to lay flat after a corneal transplant?

One of the first things after the DSEC and a DMEC corneal surgery is the positioning of the patient. Right after the surgery, the patient has to lay flat for 24 hours at least. Because an air bubble is left inside the interior of the eye, this air bubble helps push against the implanted graft in order to help it stick in its place. The patient has to lay flat for the air bubble to float up and come right up against the back of the implanted graft. The more the patient lays flat, the better is the chance of the graft staying attached to its place.

Do corneal transplants last forever?

If your body never rejects the transplanted tissue, the corneal transplant can last forever; however, rejection can happen at any time after the surgery, from one day to even 30 years from your corneal transplantation. If the transplant's new cells fail to cope with the eye, or if the tissue is rejected at any time, a new cornea has to be replaced with it in another corneal transplantation.

Why would someone need a cornea transplant?

If the cornea is damaged by conditions such as keratoconus, which causes the thinning of the cornea over time, a corneal transplantation is necessary to replace the damaged tissue. If the cornea is scarred by severe injury or infection, which can distort the vision, or if one suffers from eye conditions like Fuchs' dystrophy, which is an inherited eye disease, a corneal transplantation is the best option for treatment.

How is cornea transplant done?

Your doctor will first determine which layers of the cornea are damaged and need replacement. After the damaged part of the cornea is removed, it is replaced with the cornea of a donor, which is usually available at the eye bank. The donated tissue is then stitched to the eye with several stitches. In the case of DSEK or DMEK corneal transplantations, in which the tissue of the cornea is replaced only partially, an air bubble is placed under the cornea in order to position and keep the transplanted cornea in place.

What are the signs of corneal transplant rejection?

Corneal graft rejection Diagnosis can only be made in implantations that have remained clear for at least 2 weeks after the corneal transplantation. A patient that undergoes a corneal transplant rejection might experience redness, discomfort, or pain in the eye, blurred vision, and constant eye watering. In these cases, an urgent visit must be immediately arranged with the eye surgeon.

Does a corneal transplant change eye color?

Since the normal and healthy cornea is clear and transparent, its replacement during a corneal transplantation will not change the color of the eye.

Why is a cornea transplant rejected?

The chances of rejection in a corneal transplantation are very low. When the body recognizes the donor cornea as a foreign tissue, the cornea transplantation rejection happens. The body's immune system becomes activated and starts to destroy the transplanted tissue. Eye specialists make an effort to make sure that the donor's and the recipient's tissue types are matched in order to avoid the chances of rejection as much as possible.

What is the macula?

The macula is an oval-shaped part of the retina and is located at the back of the eye. It is the retina’s central part that responsible for focusing the central vision of the eye. Our central vision and the detail of what we see largely depend on the macula.

What is macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration also goes by age-related macular degeneration is a medical condition in which the macula that controls our visual acuity is deteriorated. ARMD is the leading cause of vision loss among older people; that’s why it is called age-related- macular degeneration.

What are the different types of ADM?

There are two types of age-related macular degeneration which are Dry and Wet;

Dry age-related macular degeneration is the most common type of ARMD in that it affects nearly more than 90% of the victims of this eye condition while wet AMD takes up approximately less than 10%. In dry ARMD, “drusen,” a small portion of fat and protein, start to pile up under the retina, which leads to aging and thinning of the macula. Usually, vision loss in dry AMD operates very slowly and in very rare cases, it leads to legal blindness. However, wet ARMD might make you totally go blind. Wet ARMD results from the gradual growth of fragile blood vessels under the retina that causes leakage of blood and fluids. Both wet and dry age-related macular degeneration are incurable.

Is macular degeneration curable?

No, there’s no absolute treatment for ARMD. We can say that both wet and dry age-related macular degeneration are incurable.

What are macular degeneration treatments currently available?

Will age-related macular degeneration cause blindness?

No, not totally, but people with age-related macular degeneration may have a weak central vision. ARMD tends to get worse slowly, so you still have a chance to keep most of your vision.

What are the signs and symptoms of age-related macular degeneration?

The most obvious symptoms are changes in your visions that include; difficulty in seeing the center of your vision, trouble to see in dim light, straight lines start to appear wavy, blurry or missing, fading, or changes in the appearance of colors. If you are experiencing the signs mentioned above, you’d better see an eye doctor as soon as possible.

How is macular degeneration diagnosed?

Age-related macular degeneration is diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam by an ophthalmologist.  Your doctor will check your overall health condition and history of your family. Then, he might perform the following tests; Autofluorescence, Ophthalmoscopy, Eye chart test, and detailed eye exam.

How can I lower my risk for age-related degeneration?

As there’s no absolute cure for age-related macular degeneration, you have to prevent it from affecting you.  To decrease the risk of ARMD, these are some tips; quit smoking, control your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, exercise regularly, eat omega-3 fatty acid, and wear sunglasses when you’re outdoor.

Can we get age-related macular degeneration in both eyes?

Yes. It is possible to have wet age-related macular degeneration in one eye and dry age-related macular degeneration in the other. Sometimes both eyes might have wet macular degeneration.

Will reading affect AMD?

No, your macular degeneration will not worsen by reading. But you might find yourself tired when you’re reading and you can have a break a bit more often.

Is age-related macular degeneration painful?

No, at all. People check their eyes for any possible sign of age-related macular degeneration because they might be unaware of any visual system or feeling pain.  So it does not cause pain.

Is age-related macular degeneration genetic?

Yes. If you have a family member affected by the disease, there is a 50% chance you might get the disease. This is because of the genetic link that you have.

Does cataract surgery increase the risk of macular disease progression?

Opinions about this case are different.  But we can safely say that cataract surgery does not contribute to the worsening of age-related macular degeneration. In some cases, dense cataracts mask the signs of macular degeneration and when it is removed, the symptoms of macular degeneration become more obvious. That’s why some people think that cataract surgery worsens the macular degeneration.

Does taking some medications affect my age-related macular degeneration?

Yes. You have to consult with your doctor before taking any medications because some of them may elevate the risk of developing AMD.

Does age always cause macular degeneration?

Yes. Since it is directly linked to age, so aging is the main factor that causes AMD.

What is LASIK eye surgery?

LASIK eye surgery is a surgical procedure performed by a specialist doctor, using modern techniques and devices to modify the cornea of the eye, correct vision, visual defects, and aims to get rid of medical glasses and contact lenses.

What is the difference between LASEK and LASIK?

Both LASIK and LASEK procedures correct vision defects, but there is a difference in the form of laser application in either of these two processes. In the LASIK process, the laser beams are projected after removing thin layers of the cornea, and the projected beams create changes in the newly developed layer. However, in the LASEK, the laser is applied directly to the cornea without the need to eradicate any layer of it.

What is the difference between LASIK and BRK?

The LASIK and PRK process improve vision defects, but there is a difference in the form of laser use in either of these two processes.

In the LASIK process, the laser beams are projected after removing thin layers of the cornea, and the projected beams create changes in the newly developed layer. However, in PRK, a very thin layer of several dozen microns is removed, and it works to reduce ocular refractive defects after finding the necessary changes in the balance of corneal curvature.

Who is a candidate for LASIK eye surgery?

The Lasik eye process can be performed for almost all people with a normal healthy state.

Who are not a suitable candidate for LASIK eye surgery?

In general, all people can have LASIK eye surgery.
