What is Botox?

To put it simply, botulinum toxin or Botox is a neurotoxin. Botox is one of the most dangerous toxins in the entire universe. As far as it is known, what it does is that it causes the muscles to become paralyzed. If you inject a large amount of Botox, it can kill you. But if you inject Botox in the smallest amounts, into specific parts of the face, and to specific muscles of the face, it can cause those muscles to relax temporarily, and for wrinkles to get smooth. Once the Botox wears off, the muscle starts coming back. So Botox does not kill your muscle. The muscle getting smaller is a secondary effect of Botox injection. Botox causes weakening, which is a primary effect, but due to that, the atrophy occurs afterward. When you inject Botox to the muscle, you weaken those muscles, and they atrophy, but if you stop Botox injection, unfortunately, it comes back.

How does Botox work?

The applications of Botox for facial enhancement and even underarm sweating are very well-established. Botox is not a filler. It works by interfering with nerve signals that go to muscles. By blocking the nerve signal by Botox injection, the muscle doesn’t contract. For example, if you have deep frown lines, the muscles responsible for these lines are the corrugator and procerus muscles. After Botox is administered, the lines are diminished since the muscles are not as active. The effects of Botox are generally seen at three days and peak at about two weeks. This effect can last about 3 to 6 months.

Areas of the face Botox that can be injected to

The first place that you can inject Botox into, which is the most common location, is called the glabella or the frown lines between the eyebrows. This area is also called the eleven sign because quite often, there are two lines making it look like the number 11.

The second most common areas for Botox injections are the crow’s feet. The crow’s feet wrinkles radiate out from the sides of the eyes, and they are caused by the Orbicularis muscle. The orbicularis muscle is a circular muscle that extends around the eyes, and it allows you to squint.

The third area for Botox injection is the forehead wrinkles. Forehead wrinkles are typically horizontal, and these are caused by the frontalis muscles. The frontalis muscles are two paired muscles on the forehead, and their work is to lift up your eyebrows. For the injection of Botox, the forehead is the area that you have to be very cautious with.

Unusual treatments with Botox

Some doctors inject a small amount of Botox in the eyelid. If you inject Botox in the eyelid, you can cause the eyes to open up a little bit. If you inject Botox into the sides of the nose, you can treat the wrinkles called bunny lines as well as the horizontal wrinkles that you can get across the nose. Another area that people inject Botox to is the chin. Botox is also a cure for a gummy smile where the upper lip lifts up too high. If you inject Botox to the sides of the nose, it can drop the lip a bit and reduce the gummy smile. It has become common to administer Botox to patients for the treatment of neurologic conditions like a hemifacial spasm and benign essential Blepharospasm as well.

Risks and side effects of Botox injection

The risks of Botox injection can be minimized by having the procedures performed by an experienced physician in an office setting. The amount of Botox that is injected is so incredibly tiny, and it is absorbed into the body, which will get rid of the Botox through natural mechanisms. You urinate it eventually as it enters your bloodstream, and your body clears out the injected Botox. The risks of Botox include:

  • Droop: droop is where the eyebrows or the eyelid drops down in one or both eyes. The way to avoid it is not to use too much Botox. When you inject Botox to the crow’s feet, you can go up a little bit and even up under the tail of the eyebrow to cause that eyebrow to lift a little bit. Then you could possibly get a drooping of the eyelid where the eyelid doesn’t open up all the way. The good news is that there is an eye drop that can be prescribed to help to open that eyelid up as you wait for the Botox to wear off.
  • Bruising: bruising is a very common side effect of Botox. Ways to avoid bruises are to use very small needles and to not go too deep into the tissue.
  • Double vision: double vision is a very rare side effect of Botox. It can happen because if you weaken the muscles that move your eyes around by using too much Botox, then you can have a result of those muscles not being able to pull evenly. So your eyes can be crushed, and you can have a double vision.
  • Allergic reactions: you can have an allergic reaction to Botox, but it’s very rare. In fact, 200 people a year die from allergies to food. But no one has ever died from an allergy to Botox.

The cost of Botox injection

Depending on the area you are getting done with Botox and the units of Botox that need to be injected to that specific area, in the United States, the cost of Botox injection can range from $25 to $1,150. In India, without considering the city, clinic, and each doctor’s specific rate, each unit of Botox costs around eight dollars. Therefore, in India, one injection of 20 units of Botox for the forehead, will come to an average sum of $300. In South Korea, the costs of Botox injection range from $400 to $2600.
