The process of focusing light on the retina located in the back of the eye is done by the cornea and the lenses in the front part of the eye. The cornea and the lens collaborate with each other to focus light on the retina. The produced light passes from the front part to the back of the eye through aqueous humor, which is a gelatinous substance inside the eyeball.
When a person looks at something bright such as a white paper or the sky, he/she may experience a vision problem and is called a floating eye. Floating eyes can appear in the form of points and lines or back and gray strings. The floating eye causes the person to see a large shadow and a result build a big spot in the eye.
Floating eyes cause no harm and don't need medical treatment. However, if the affected person experiences a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light in the eye, vision loss, quick changes that worsen gradually, eye pain, and eye floaters after surgery, it is necessary to see a doctor and find a solution for these problems. Keep in mind that these symptoms are related to aging, as vitreous humor begins to thicken with age.
There exist symptoms for the floating eye that might cause eye problems and when a person sees some of these signs, he should see an eye doctor. Some of floating eye symptoms are:
- Having spots that move when the eye moves and views the surrounding.
- Seeing dark spots, sometimes with transparent streaks.
- Seeing transparent spots when looking at a white paper or sky.
Floating eyes mainly caused by changes related to age and eye problems such as inflammation inside the migraines and other diseases. Eye floating might be caused by an injury in the eye, having cataract surgery, short-sightedness, separation of the vitreous part which indicates aging, and in which the vitreous gel weakens and begins to sag and move away from the eyeball.
Sometimes small patches of protein and other substances during pregnancy or vascular disorders and other injures might be causes of floating eyes as well. As we mentioned earlier, eye floating is one of the prevalent eye problems in that most people get affected with an eye floating at least once in their life.
In most cases, floating eyes don't carry any harm and, therefore, don't need medical treatment. However, in rare cases, you have to see an eye doctor and have regular eye check-ups if your eye floating occurs repeatedly and more severely and worse than before. In this case, you might experience vision loss, blurred vision, or shadow when focusing on objects.
When you have these symptoms, you should call your doctor and ask about why you have these symptoms when you're going to be treated, how long does it last to get rid of the floating eye? And what's the best treatment?
The doctor, in turn, would ask the following questions: when do the floating eyes begin to appear? Did the floats increase by time? Have you ever had surgery? Do you take medications for diseases like blood pressure or diabetes?
After these questions and answers, the doctor comes up with the detection of floating eyes and advise the patient to try to keep these floats out of his eyes and do not let them disturb his vision. For example, moving his eyes, the fluid moves in the floats, the eyes move up and down instead of moving them towards the sides, or the patient can focus on a picture or something in front of him until the floats disappear.
When the floating eyes are large enough to be present through conditions such as diseases, eye wounds, diabetic retinopathy, or the presence of quasi-crystal deposits in the vitreous eye, eye tumors, retinal detachment, tearing, inflammation, and bleeding in the body of the eye, treatment options may include what Follows:
• Laser treatment of eye floater: The process of fragmentation of the floating eye reduces a large part of the floats through the use of lasers by the doctor who sends a special laser to remove floats. The outcome of this procedure varies in many people who are subject to this process. Some people, undergoing this process, get an improved vision after the procedure, while others might end up with little difference or no difference at all after using the laser.
• The surgery to remove the vitreous: The ophthalmologist removes the vitreous through a small incision (vitrectomy) and after this procedure, he replaces the vitreous with a liquid that helps the patient's eye maintain its shape. Sometimes the person notices some floats after the operation, or not all the floats are removed, and the person may also face the development of new floats after the surgery to remove the vitreous. Among the risks of this process are bleeding and rupture of the retina.
