Coronavirus

I’m sure since the past few weeks you have heard a lot about the new disease called Coronavirus. But what’s exactly coronavirus? What are its symptoms? What caused this virus? And what measures we need to take to stay safe from this disease? Follow us in this article written by medtouriran.com a medical facilitator in Iran.

What’s coronavirus؟

Coronavirus has become a global concern since its outbreak on 12 December 2019 and spread around the world and has affected thousands of people. It is an outbreak of disease that started in Wuhan, one of the central Chinese cities caused by a new species of virus called Novel Coronavirus. They belong to a member of the coronavirus family that was first identified in the 1960s. They are responsible for a range of diseases in humans, including the common cold and more severe and life-threatening forms like SARS and MERS. But the crucial question is, how did the recent outbreak occur?

Coronavirus causes

The cause of coronavirus is the trend of google search these days. Probable causes have been indicated, but since the virus is new, it is difficult to determine the exact cause of coronavirus. However, there are some speculations. It is speculated that like other coronaviruses, it might come from animals too, and it’s a form of zoonotic disease. Many of those infected patients either worked or frequently shopped in the Huanan seafood wholesale market in the center of the Chinese city, which sells meat and live animals. It is believed that the virus might have been transmitted through direct contact between humans and animals either by touching those animals or consuming them. What else, it can spread via the air like other cold-causing viruses. But what is the likely source of Coronavirus? It looks like it came from bats. Unfortunately, the actual and exact origin of this disease is not confirmed yet, and scientists are still trying to figure it out.

Coronavirus type

This new virus is the seventh known virus coronavirus, and it affects the respiratory system. Some coronaviruses have mild symptoms, while others are much more dangerous. SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus) are both coronaviruses. Other types of coronavirus are;

  • 1- 2293(alpha coronavirus)
  • 2- NL63(alpha coronavirus)
  • 3- OC43(beta coronavirus)
  • 4- HKU1(beta coronavirus)
  • The current coronavirus under outbreak is still new; that’s why they call it Novel Coronavirus.

How does coronavirus spread?

This is the most urgent question to impose so as to stop this lethal virus. It seems that the virus can be transmitted between humans, but it’s unclear whether this happens routinely. Of course, in rare cases, they can spread to humans, a process is known as zoonosis. However, there is so much uncertainty about the new coronavirus that makes it impossible to make accurate predictions. This is because we don’t exactly know how many people have the virus right now. What’s more, we don’t know how easily and quickly the virus spreads. On average it looks as though each infected person has the ability to infect two or three more persons.  This is could be significant in number as time passes on. Up till now the number of infections is thought to have doubled every six days and that’s goanna give us some really big numbers. Mass quarantines, the extended public holiday, plus putting the public on alert may slow the spread of disease from person to person. The following are the common ways through which the virus can spread;

  • 1- Coughing and sneezing without covering the mouth
  • 2-  Touching or shaking hands with a person who has the virus
  • 3- Contacting any surface or object that has the virus and then touching your nose, eyes, or mouth.

What can we do to stop this outbreak?

Well, it is always advisable to practice good hygiene and caution by avoiding close contact with individuals suffering from acute respiratory infections, wild animals, and livestock, dead or alive. Also, it would best to wash your hands with warm and soapy water regularly, especially after being in direct contact with an infected person. If you find any of the mentioned symptoms, do visit your doctor as soon as possible.

Coronavirus symptoms

A person infected from this disease may suffer from dry cough, mild fever, and breathing issues, which may go unnoticed at first. But as the virus spreads its legs inside the person’s body, the patients might develop a severe case of viral pneumonia, an infection that inflames the air sacs in the lungs and can cause them to fill with fluid or pus and need immediate medical attention. The virus is named after its shape, which takes the form of a crown hence is known as Coronavirus. Also, the full name of the current form of Coronavirus under outbreak is the 2019 Novel Coronavirus or 2019-nCoV. The common symptoms of coronavirus are fever, dry cough, runny nose, sore throat, sneezing, fatigue, and shortness of breath.

It is believed that these viruses are more likely to infect older people and those with a weak immune system that find it hard to fight these notorious viruses. But is there any way to treat this disease?

Coronavirus treatment

Unfortunately, this is a very new illness, and no treatment for it is available so far. Because it is a virus, anti-bionics won’t work against it. However, the symptoms can be treated. So each person will be looked at individually and depending on their symptoms, they will have different treatments for it.  Also, a piece of good news is the doctors are currently working on a vaccine for the coronavirus, which is great news. Prevention is an excellent treatment, and measures could be taken to quarantine any travelers returning from Wuhan China in the last few weeks so as to prevent the new virus into the new environment.

Coronavirus hospital

This rather temporary hospital was built in just 10 days to cope with the deadly coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan. Huoshenshan Hospital, the name of Wuhan coronavirus hospital, is 25,000 square-meters and will provide an additional 1,000 beds. The construction of the hospital began on 24 January. Thousands of workers toiled day and night in a race against time, and during the construction over 40 million people watched a live-stream of the construction. The hospital opened on 3 February specifically to care for coronavirus patients.
