Cardiology is one of the subspecialties of medicine, focusing on heart disorders and the circulatory system (cardiovascular system). Cardiologists are physicians who have specialized in Cardiology. Cardiology includes procedures such as:
Angioplasty is also known as balloon angioplasty or coronary angioplasty. Angioplasty is performed to widen or open clogged heart veins. In this surgery a balloon catheter is inserted into the narrowed or clogged vein. The balloon is then inflated into a specified size which forces the vein to expand and improves blood flow. To make sure that the vein stays open, a stent (a metal or plastic tube) might be inserted into the vein and finally, the balloon is withdrawn.
The most common type of heart surgery performed on adults is the Open-Heart Surgery or CABG (coronary artery bypass surgery). This surgery is done when the patient's blood veins have become narrow and hard, which is called coronary heart disease. This surgery is also done to repair damaged areas of the heart or to repair or replace heart valves.
Catheter Ablation is also called Radiofrequency Ablation. This procedure uses radiofrequency waves to treat arrhythmias. Radiofrequency waves are used to destroy small areas of the heart tissue that are causing irregular heartbeats. Catheter Ablation is performed when medication is not effective. Radiofrequency Ablation is also a safe and effective method to deal with some forms of pain.
There are four valves in the heart, each with different names. In case one of these valves doesn’t function properly, Heart Valve Surgery is needed. During the surgery, based on the patient's condition, the surgeon can either repair or replace the heart valves. Heart Valve Surgery can be performed using different surgical procedure like open-heart surgery or minimally invasive heart surgery.
Echocardiography is also known as a Cardiac Echo or simply an Echo . Echocardiography creates images of the heart using ultrasound. This method is one of the most widely used diagnostic tests in cardiology. A heart Echo provides lots of helpful information like the shape or the size of the heart and enables doctors to completely monitor the heart.
The aorta is the main blood vessel which carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. If the aorta somehow becomes weak, the pressure of the blood flow can cause it to swell. This condition is called 'aneurysm'. If the aneurysm is small, it can be treated with medicine, but larger ones need surgery. Most aortic disorders are treated using open surgical repair.
